Before she even told her husband, she called me with the good news. Hell, I've known her a LOT longer than she's known him. We were in Kindergarten together and became best friends in 4th grade. Hell yeah, she'd call me first.
At first she asked me not to tell anyone because she wanted to wait a little while before telling her mom (Mary). Being just a few weeks shy of her 41st birthday, Robyn is considered a high-risk. So she wanted to see the doctor first before making the announcement to her parents.
But last Thursday her family got some bad news. Her dad (Dale) has been in and out of the hospital since last December and now there wasn't anything the doctors could do for him. His liver was failing; his kidneys were failing; his heart was weak and surrounded by infection. He has been retaining fluid making his legs and belly swell. All the doctors could do now was send him home and try to make his last days comfortable.
Robyn couldn't wait until August 25 for the doctor's appointment. She needed to share the good news now. So earlier today Robyn and her husband (Robert) presented Dale and Mary with a little baby's outfit. Dale didn't really understand what all the excitement was about, but there is no doubt that Mary was excited to hear the news. With all the pain and anguish they've been going through, they all were happy to share the joyous news.
So here's where I come in. My best friend is pregnant and I don't know what to expect.
Over the last couple days Robyn mentioned that her hormones must be out of control because she is so emotional. And today she said her breasts are so sore that Robert can even hug her. I didn't know pregnant women went through all of that.
I'm 41 and I don't plan on ever having children. My hubby and I are happy with our four-legged babies and our "come-and-go-as-you-please" lifestyle.
So what is going to happen to our friendship? How will it change?
Will Robyn be able to fly to Detroit to see Nickelback and Kid Rock with me if she has a baby at home? Will she have to give up her job, which she loves, and which I love hearing about her adventures? Will she trade in her beach bag for a diaper bag?
How is her pregnancy going to affect me?
That's what this blog is about so all of you childless best friends can know what to expect when your best friend is expecting.
